5 Interior Design Mistakes People Always Regret (and How to Avoid Them)

From paint colour regrets to oversized furniture — these are the design decisions people wish they could undo.

If you’ve ever walked into a room and thought, “Something just feels… off,” you’re not alone. Even the most well intentioned home decorators can fall into common traps that make a space feel awkward, cluttered, or dated.

The good news? These design mistakes are totally avoidable — with a little planning and a lot of intention.

Here are the five interior design mistakes we see most often — and how to avoid them in your own home.

1. Poor Lighting Plans

The Mistake:
Relying on a single overhead light (usually a harsh one) to do all the work.

The Fix:
Layer your lighting. A well designed room includes a mix of ambient (general), task (functional), and accent (mood) lighting. Think ceiling fixtures, floor lamps, table lamps, and even LED strips or sconces. Bonus: warm bulbs  make your space feel instantly more inviting.

2. Ignoring Scale and Proportion

The Mistake:
Furniture that’s too big or too small for the room — or each other.

The Fix:
Measure before you buy. Use painter’s tape to mock up furniture outlines on the floor. And remember: a large room with tiny furniture looks just as off balance as a small room with giant pieces. Proportion and balance are key.

3. Choosing Trend Over Longevity

The Mistake:
Going all in on whatever’s trending on Instagram or Pinterest.

The Fix:
Incorporate trends in ways that are easy to swap out — like throw cushions, vases, or accent paint. Keep big ticket items (like your sofa or kitchen units) classic and timeless so they last beyond the season’s latest colour craze.

4. Skimping on Key Pieces

The Mistake:
Blowing the budget on accessories but buying the cheapest sofa or dining table.

The Fix:
Invest in the pieces that get used daily or make a visual impact — your sofa, bed, dining table, and statement lighting. These are worth getting right the first time. You can save on secondary items like side tables, throws, and decorative accents.

5. Not Thinking About Function First

The Mistake:
Designing for looks over lifestyle.

The Fix:
Function should always come first. Ask yourself: How do I live in this space? Where does clutter build up? Where do I need task lighting? A beautiful home is one that works for your real life — not just for photos.

Stylish, magnificent, inspirational...

I have recently renovated a bungalow and used Q interiors for the interior design.  I have been so pleased with the advice and support and the end result is fantastic.  I am recently widowed and Karen supported me throughout the project with advice and ideas, she went over and above her remit and I am so grateful. I love my finished home – it is so tasteful, modern and fresh.  Karen’s attention to detail is amazing and the quality of the soft furnishings is fabulous.  I would definitely recommend the company, the service has been faultless.
