The Best Ways to Style a Large Open Plan Living Space in Newcastle and Northumberland

Open plan living continues to be a favourite choice for modern homes across Newcastle and Northumberland. With their generous proportions social layouts and bright interiors they offer fantastic flexibility for family life and entertaining. The challenge many homeowners face is making these large spaces feel cohesive warm and beautifully styled.

The first and most important step is zoning. Divide the room into separate areas for living dining working or relaxing. You can do this with rugs consoles sofas lighting or even subtle changes in colour. Zoning gives structure to an open plan space and prevents it from feeling empty or disjointed.

Furniture placement makes a huge difference. Do not push everything against the walls. Instead float sofas to create natural boundaries and use accent chairs to frame conversation areas. A console table behind a sofa adds visual interest and a practical surface for lamps or styling.

Lighting is another powerful tool. Use different types of lighting for each zone. Pendant lighting above the dining table creates atmosphere. Table lamps in the lounge area bring warmth. Under cabinet lighting in the kitchen adds functionality. This layered lighting ensures the entire space feels inviting morning through evening.

Colour continuity is important too. Choose a palette that flows across the whole open plan space. This does not mean every zone must match perfectly but the colours should complement each other. Warm neutrals with touches of green or soft brown work beautifully across the North East especially in homes where natural light varies throughout the day.

Large scale furniture fills open plan spaces better than lots of small items. A generous corner sofa a substantial dining table or a large rug can anchor the room and make it feel complete. Small pieces tend to disappear and can make the space feel cluttered rather than cohesive.

Texture also plays a huge role. Mixing wood stone fabrics and metals adds depth and interest. Natural materials are especially effective in North East homes because they balance modern layouts with warm inviting character.

Finally do not forget styling. A statement vase on the dining table a curated tray on the coffee table a large piece of artwork or a beautiful floor plant can tie the whole scheme together and elevate the entire room.

Stylish, magnificent, inspirational...

I have recently renovated a bungalow and used Q interiors for the interior design.  I have been so pleased with the advice and support and the end result is fantastic.  I am recently widowed and Karen supported me throughout the project with advice and ideas, she went over and above her remit and I am so grateful. I love my finished home – it is so tasteful, modern and fresh.  Karen’s attention to detail is amazing and the quality of the soft furnishings is fabulous.  I would definitely recommend the company, the service has been faultless.
