New years home refresh: 10 interior design tips to brighten your home in time for Spring

For many, the new year means one thing; it’s time for a refresh.

Rejuvenation of the mind, an update of the routine, but also people take the opportunity of a fresh start to rethink their interior design choices.

From enhancing your space with new lighting fixtures or artwork, to completely transforming your room with a fresh coat of paint, in this blog, we are bringing you 10 interior design tips to kickstart your new years home refresh just in time for Spring.

1. Transition to Spring with seasonal florals

A simple but gorgeous way to freshen up your space post-winter is to introduce spring flowers and foliage into your rooms.

Daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, and peonies arranged in a fresh vase help to bring light, life, and colour to a room and don’t require an extravagant budget.

Adding a few vases of fresh flowers throughout your home every few weeks or even once every couple of months is a great way to inject life back into your interior design.

2. Organise your space

The new year can often come with a sense of stress around reorganising, decluttering, and redecorating to prepare for what’s to come.

If redecorating isn’t on your agenda but you feel the need to have a sort-out, investing in new storage space is the perfect way to find a new home for your belongings and create a tidier atmosphere.

Whether you decide to go for a hidden trunk underneath your window sill seating, or a vintage wooden set of drawers to sit beneath your television or canvas, purchasing new, or re-using old storage units provides you with extra space and enhances your overall interior design.

3. Make a statement with new artwork

If you are interested in adding a splash of vibrancy to your walls or empty spaces within your room, why not consider including more artwork in your current interior design?

We would suggest choosing pieces that will endure many room refreshes that are yet to come and that hold personal value to you.

To choose artwork to match your style, you don’t need to be an expert, you may wish to choose pieces that have been created by a family member or close friend or a luxury piece that has caught your eye and is abstract or striking.

4. Consider wallpapering

If, as we touched on earlier, you aren’t ready to tackle a full redecoration project, upgrading your room with wallpaper is a lovely way to add depth to your room.

Spruce up your decor by applying wallpaper to either one or multiple walls in a pattern that complements your room’s interior design. For example, take into account the colours, tones, and textures already used within the room and decide what function the wallpaper will play.

Are you planning on creating an accent wall to add an extra dimension? Or are you planning to wallpaper multiple walls to liven up your current minimalist interior?

5. Switch up your fragrances to match the season

Similarly to introducing fresh Spring flower bouquets, an easy way to kickstart your new year’s home refresh is to switch up your choice of fragrances.

Whether you are a lover of candles, like to position reed diffusers in hidden spots around your home, or prefer to use fresh plants and oil diffusers, each of these scent options can be updated season by season.

Moving from sweeter festive scents such as vanilla, ginger, and cranberry, to fresher florals such as eucalyptus, lavender, jasmine, and neroli can freshen your environment ready for the arrival of Spring.

6. Add a fresh coat of paint

If you are thinking of diving into a larger interior design project in the new year, but want to make smaller changes to have a huge impact, we’d advise you to start with a fresh lick of paint.

Whether you are focusing on one room or your entire home, although a slightly bigger commitment, painting can completely transform your space.

For a paint project, it’s particularly important to consider colours carefully and choose something that will work all year round. This doesn’t restrict you to whites and creams, but instead, colours that match each season such as greens, greys, and pinks or neutrals such as browns and beiges.

7. Rearrange your current furniture pieces

Reshuffling the furniture you already have can make a room look and feel brand new.

Why not start by moving all of the furniture out of one room and reassessing the space you have? This includes removing rugs, lamps, light fixtures, mirrors, and wall hangings to give yourself a blank canvas to work with.

Starting from scratch will allow you to better evaluate your rooms and you may find that your sofa works better in a different position, or perhaps you would like to swap out your mirror and favourite art piece, or maybe even throw pieces out altogether!

8. Upgrade the light fixtures in your room

Lighting can easily elevate a space as well as illuminate your home.

Upgrading your light fixtures to something more statement such as a chandelier in your living space or pendant lighting over your dining room table can give your room the lift it needs without the need for additional changes.

Alternatively, incorporating new lamps around your home for example swing arm lamps, or torchieres can add a warm glow, help to fill empty corners, and tie your room design together.

9. Focus on one room

Tackling a full home renovation or redecoration may be your goal for 2024, however, this task can be a daunting one.

Instead of trying to update all rooms in your home and becoming overwhelmed, an alternative option would be to focus on one room or even one area in your home. Redecorating your entryway or hallway by reflooring, repainting, or rearranging furniture can ensure your home is welcoming and refreshing as soon as you or your guests take a step inside.

On the other hand, it may be a good idea to spruce up a room that is used most often, for example, your living room or kitchen diner, where people spend the most time.

10. Treat yourself to a new piece

Whether you have your eye on a new set of quilted bedding to match your freshly applied wallpaper or are finally going to bite the bullet and invest in a brand new sofa and armchair set to complement to colour palette of your living room, your new years home refresh is the perfect opportunity to do so!
